Gebr. Meier AG: Guardian of Urban Lifelines, Jointly Building a Reliable Ally for Infrastructure

In Switzerland in the 1930s, the acceleration of urbanization put unprecedented pressure on water supply pipeline networks. Although Gebrüder Meier AG had accumulated rich experience in pipeline engineering, it faced severe challenges in the construction of large-scale water transmission networks: insufficient sealing reliability of cast iron pipe fittings led to multiple leaks in Bern’s new water supply system during pressure tests. More problematic, slight dimensional differences existed between different batches of pipe fittings, greatly reducing on-site installation efficiency and seriously affecting the construction progress of the urban water supply system.

When the second-generation operators of the Meier family were anxious about this, HMS demonstrated its unique expertise in industrial standardization. Instead of directly participating in pipeline construction, we took the lead in organizing the "Swiss Municipal Pipeline Network Standards Committee," bringing together Gebrüder Meier AG with material scientists, casting experts, and municipal engineers to jointly formulate Switzerland’s first manufacturing and inspection standards for cast iron pipe fittings.

The core achievement of this cooperation was the establishment of a "precision certification system for pipeline components." HMS designed special testing tools and acceptance procedures to ensure that the dimensional tolerance and sealing surface precision of each batch of pipe fittings met unified standards. At the same time, we introduced a "component traceability coding system," enabling each pipe fitting to be traced to the production line and quality inspection personnel. When the Zurich Municipal Authority adopted this set of standards for bidding, Gebrüder Meier AG successfully won the first large-scale water transmission pipeline network contract with its standardized products.

HMS’s Insight:The most enduring reliability stems from the joint adherence to basic standards.

We firmly believe that true industrial progress comes from transforming practical wisdom into an inheritable standard system, making infrastructure a solid foundation for urban development.
