In Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in the 1930s, the wave of precision industry was quietly reshaping the landscape of traditional craftsmanship. The young Mr. Benoit Jolivet, leveraging his family’s inherited spring-making skills, made a name for himself in medical instruments and watchmaking. However, when customers put forward strict, quantifiable, and repeatable requirements for the mechanical properties of micro-springs, this craftsman who relied on fingertip feel and experience felt the impact of the industrial era for the first time.

 

The core issue lay in "the standardization of elasticity." Mr. Jolivet could hand-wind springs with excellent performance, but the slight force variations between batches became a key barrier to his entry into the high-end medical device supply chain. For a craftsman who took pride in his craft, transforming the intangible "handfeel" into cold numerical parameters was undoubtedly a painful transformation.

 

When Mr. Jolivet faced the dilemma between inheriting his craft and meeting the demands of the times, HMS engineers visited with an innovative testing concept. Instead of replacing the craftsman’s skilled hands with a fully automated production line, we co-developed a precise mechanical testing and data recording device with him. This system could real-time capture and quantify the force variation curve of springs during compression, converting the craftsman’s valuable accumulated experience into analyzable and optimizable scientific parameters.

 

This cooperation not only helped Benoit Jolivet’s workshop secure its first long-term contract in the medical device field but, more importantly, pioneered the industry’s focus on "precise mechanical properties of elastic components." They successfully integrated centuries of craftsmanship with scientific data, laying a solid foundation for becoming a hidden champion in the global precision elastic components industry.
